Detail from Proganochelys:

This gouache painting shows the restored
paleo-ecology of a Triassic location that was
unearthed in Germany. Included in this fossil
record was Proganochelys, the oldest most
complete turtle ever found. Mixed with the
bones of the turtle were the remains of the
early dinosaur, plateosaur. Evidence
suggests that a catastrophic mud flow may
have trapped the animals together where
they were found.

The illustration was originally prepared
for the monograph on Proganochelys. The
painting currently hangs on permanent
exhibit in the Hall of Early Vertebrates in
The American Museum of Natural History
in New York City.
