Planned as an interactive, hands-on exhibit, the illustration is broken down into nine zones. Each zone presents a specific extinct creature, restored in its naturalistic setting. The presentation allows visitors to manually swing each of nine sub-panels to reveal related text and specimens. Design specs did not originally include the cypress swamp environment, reflected in the preliminary sketch below.
