Detail from: Spotted Salamander

This illustration was rendered using
opaque watercolor, called gouache.
This close-up shows how well suited for
handling detailed subject matter this
medium can be. Applied techniques
include the use of opaque layers of flat
color that lay atop the paper's surface.
High opacity allows for the layering of
lighter tones over darker ones.

The illustration was commissioned by
the New York City Parks Department
and used within an interpretive guide
to the Forests of New York City.
