Diamond-Backed Terrapin

The illustration was commissioned by
the New York City Parks Department
to be used within an interpretive guide
to the Salt Marshes of New York City.

The difference between the atmosphere
seen above and below the surface is
reinforced by a varied emphasis on
airbrushed textures.

The painting contains an element
that I try to introduce into many of
the landscapes I depict. In this case,
it is a dead blade of Spartina grass
that conveys the fact that life and
death are always found side-by-side
throughout nature.
